Profile

Mary Handfelt

During the last eight years, I have worked with students to present their personal story in their own voice on their college application essays. This process can be transformative, giving students confidence that they can compete and succeed in college.

Students find me by referral, and I have had the pleasure of working with many families over the years as each of their kids begins the college process.

I am currently founding board member, CFO and  volunteer College Coach with PiCS (Partners in College Success). Our organization works with immigrant and low-income, first-generation students in San Diego’s East County to improve college access and completion rates as well as career success. By building face-to-face relationships and offering informative workshops and resources, PiCS strives to ensure that high-potential, disadvantaged youth graduate from college and secure employment, establishing financial stability for their families.

My other passion is art.  For 16 years I have led training workshops for the non-profit Art Corps, a volunteer-based fine arts education program serving local elementary schools.  As a former Board Member and volunteer with     U-TOUCH I co-authored Secrets of War, a book of stories and drawings by students in northern Uganda. This book received the endorsement of Jan Egeland, former Undersecretary of Humanitarian Affairs for the United Nations.  U-TOUCH is a nonprofit organization focused on bringing opportunity through technology to disadvantaged people around the world.

I am a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a B.S. in Human Relations and Organizational Behavior.  My career includes 10 years as co-owner and executive producer of an Emmy award-winning corporate video production company in Los Angeles, as well as management positions in Sales, Marketing, and Human Resources, in Fortune 500 companies and startups. My business perspective and visual communication experience give me unique skills in developing compelling written communications.
